WWI French Sweetheart Brooch – "YPRES" Copper Chestnut Leaf Brooch
This World War I French sweetheart brooch is fashioned from stamped copper in the form of a spray of chestnut leaves and spiky chestnut burs within an Art Nouveau circular frame. A flowing banner across the front is inscribed "YPRES,"commemorating the Belgian city that became synonymous with some of the fiercest fighting of the Great War.
Commercially produced and sold as a patriotic keepsake, sweetheart brooches like this were popular among French soldiers and civilians alike, serving as lasting reminders of wartime service and sacrifice.
Measures approximately 1⅛ inches (28 mm) in diameter.
Condition
Fair antique condition. The original pin and clasp are no longer present, preventing the brooch from being worn as intended. The copper exhibits dark patina, oxidation, verdigris, and age-related surface wear consistent with its age and wartime use. Despite its condition issues, the "YPRES" banner remains clearly legible and the decorative chestnut leaf motif is well preserved. Please review all photographs as they form an important part of the description.
